Oh darkened daughter of Eve, now overshadowed by highest glory, Hold and hallow the aves within your whispered embrace, God-bearer, woman-blessed, Treasuring sacred seeds given, Till your secret garden bursts open to new and wailing life, Mother and child shouting for exhausted joy— Magnificat! Magnificat! Since venom-inked lungs breathed the pure word and believed, You pull all the faithful remnant through the narrow way of your womb To follow the lord-child, God-man, Spirit made ten-fingered flesh— All because of your yes, Your single, brave and ground-breaking Magnificat! Magnificat! Because you heard the gardener’s voice through sweeping breakers of tears And in new creation’s waves saw the God-man, new-Adam Stretch out his hand to the weeping queen, Ten-fingered and tender to raise and release her— Run and tell, shout the waking life as only you can, Your full-throated, brave and earth-shaking Magnificat! Magnificat!
